Mechelen has undergone a real metamorphosis in recent years. When it got a new mayor in 2001, it changed from a marginal town to a topper among the Flemish art cities. Every year more residents and visitors find their way to the city.

Mechelen ist eigentlich ein großes Viertel mit dem Groten Markt als historischem Mittelpunkt. Dieser große zentrale Platz wird vom beeindruckenden St. Rumbold's Tower dominiert. Sowohl der Skywalk auf den 97m hohen Turm als auch der Aufstieg garantieren ein besonderes Erlebnis.
Alle Häuser stammen aus unterschiedlichen Epochen und haben unterschiedliche Stilrichtungen, insbesondere Renaissance und Rokoko. Mitten im historischen Zentrum spürt man die blühende und burgundische Handelsstadt, die Mechelen einst war.
